Event Details
This summer the Bishop Library will be hosting two kids’ programs on Fridays. The first is in the morning from 10:30 to 11:30 for preschool-ish aged children, during which a parent or guardian MUST stay with their child. The afternoon program is from 3:00 to 4:30 for elementary aged children. During the afternoon program children may attend alone IF AND ONLY IF: (1) the parent or guardian feels that the child is mature enough to be responsible for good behavior while unattended in the library, and (2) the parent or guardian’s contact information is left with the librarian. If a child’s behavior is disruptive or if there is an emergency, the librarian will contact the parent or guardian and ask that the child be picked up. Under no circumstances will a librarian transport children to any destination.

Friday, June 17: Father’s Day
Father’s Day is on Sunday, June 19th, so today we are celebrating dads! Craft a pencil/pen holder for your father (or anyone you love!) and decorate a card to go with it. Kids are encouraged (but not required) to bring in a photograph of their father to incorporate in the gift.
Friday, June 24: Garden Day
Get your hands dirty and learn about local plants! Decorate your very own flower pot and help plant a native plant garden in the library courtyard. Kids are STRONGLY encouraged to wear clothes they can get dirty.
Friday, July 1: Independence Day
Independence Day is on Monday, July 4th, so today we are going back in time and learning about the original 13 colonies and the Declaration of Independence! We’ll be making and decorating tricorn hats that we’ll wear as we craft 13-star flags while singing along with patriotic songs.
Friday, July 8: Choose Your Own Adventure Day
Today we will be attempting to survive dangerous adventures in a round robin reading of classic “Choose Your Own Adventure” books. Who will survive? Who will be eaten by an angry pterodactyl? Join us to find out! Survivors will band together to write their very own “Choose Your Own Adventure” story and receive a copy to take home.
Friday, July 15: Under the Sea Day
Don’t forget to bring your beach towel because today the library has been transported deep beneath the sea! We’ll be decorating wild and crazy octopus hats and crafting submarine mobiles while we learn all about the creatures that call the ocean home. Kids are encouraged to bring a beach towel to sit on as we craft.
Friday, July 22: Art Day
Join us as we explore three (mostly) no-mess art forms: watercolors, mosaics, and origami. Kids get to take home everything they make, or they can choose to leave some artwork to be displayed in the library for everyone to admire!
Friday, July 29: Camp Out at the Library Day
We’re exploring the great outdoors today… inside the library! We’ll be crafting cute paper-bag animals and rocking birds while we learn about the animals that call the forest home. If we are lucky, we may even meet a few wild animals! Kids are encouraged to bring a sleeping bag to sit on as we craft.
Friday, August 5: Olympics Day
Today is the opening of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and we will be hosting our very own Olympics at the library to determine who will take home the gold! Participants will craft their very own laurel wreath crown to wear as they compete in a variety of challenges designed to test their teamwork, coordination, and athleticism. Kids are STRONGLY encouraged to wear clothes that they can get dirty and wet.
Friday, August 12: Water Science Day
You are invited to our secret laboratory (A.K.A. the library courtyard) to perform a variety of experiments with that natural resource we all know and love: water! We’ll be growing our own rock candy, learning how to make art with oil and water, and harnessing the power of evaporation to create drinking water.
Friday, August 19: End of Summer Party
Monday, August 22nd is the start of the school year, so today we will be throwing an End of Summer party for everyone who participated in the Bishop Library’s Kids’ Summer Programs. During the party we will be awarding prizes to the Book Bingo winners.
